EUNICE Energy Group Leads the Way: National Funding Secured for a State-of-the-Art Data Center in Western Macedonia

Athens, November 22, 2024

The EUNICE Energy Group (EEG) proudly announces the approval of national funding for developing a cutting-edge Data Center in Western Macedonia, as part of Greece’s national decarbonization strategy. This landmark investment combines innovation, sustainability, and regional development, aligning seamlessly with the objectives of the European Green Deal.

Situated in Western Macedonia, a region with exceptional climatic conditions and robust energy infrastructure, the new Data Center is poised to harness renewable energy resources, contributing to energy efficiency and sustainability.

The project, to be developed in Amyntaio, Florina, will be spearheaded by the Group’s new subsidiary, Eunice Bright Data MAE. With a total investment of €31.5 million and an equal eligible expense, the project has secured €15.77 million in funding, empowering it to achieve its ambitious objectives.

This initiative underscores the EUNICE Energy Group’s clean energy and innovation leadership. Partnerships with key stakeholders, including the University of Western Macedonia and MIT Professor Dr. Dimitris Bertsimas, further bolster the Group’s capacity to deliver projects of this magnitude and significance.

George Kalavrouziotis, Chairman and CEO of the EUNICE Energy Group, stated:
“This Data Center is more than a technological infrastructure; it is a transformative force for Western Macedonia, contributing to the region’s sustainable development and Greece’s energy security. Once again, the EUNICE Group demonstrates its ability to develop groundbreaking projects that reshape realities and promote national and global innovation.”

One of the project’s standout features is its connection to the Group’s BESS Ptolemaida energy storage system, which the European Union has recognized as a Project of Common Interest (PCI). This ensures the Data Center’s uninterrupted 24/7 operation, providing energy stability and resilience.

Strategic partner MIT Professor Dr. Dimitris Bertsimas remarked:
“This initiative integrates cutting-edge technology in renewable energy, optimization systems, and artificial intelligence, creating a model of sustainable development that can be replicated on a global scale.”

The rapid implementation of the investment, as announced by the Minister of National Economy and Finance, Mr. Nikos Papathanasis, during a press conference yesterday, will begin at the start of the new year, following the swift and efficient completion of the evaluation process. This development is of critical importance for the economic transformation of the Western Macedonia region, historically dependent on lignite mining.

The Data Center will redefine the area, transforming it into a hub of sustainable growth, innovation, and technological advancement. By leveraging renewable energy, cutting-edge technologies, and local resources, it paves the way for a brighter future—not only for Greece but also for the local community—creating new employment opportunities and fostering social and economic cohesion.

The EUNICE Energy Group, with its leadership in green energy, is at the forefront of the transition from a lignite-dependent economy to a model of sustainable and resilient development. With its vision, expertise, and commitment to sustainability, the Group ensures that projects like this Data Center lay the groundwork for a carbon-neutral economy and a stronger, more sustainable future for all.
